Ostuni and its 20-kilometre coastline
The coast road of Ostuni. No one can deny that foreigners and Italians who choose Southern Italy for their holidays are attracted by the mild climate, golden sands, shiny cliffs, clean sea, unique views, healthy gastronomy and the exquisite kindness of the locals. In particular, our coastline, bordered by characteristic dunes and luxuriant Mediterranean scrub vegetation, is one of the largest and most indented in Apulia, a holidaymaker’s delight with its beautiful golden sandy beaches and fragrant coastline, where the waves of the blue Adriatic break.
The coastline is about 20 kilometres long, starting at Lido Morelli, where there is a wetland area, and ending at Lamaforca, so called because of its gallows-like shape. It was in this area that tourism was first introduced in the early 1960s, when the first tourist village, Valtur, was built. Both Valtur, Rosa Marina and Pilone, which sprang up along the coast, were the villages, hotels and campsites whose accommodation became famous for their elegance and comfort. But the coastal strip is not only famous and important for the many tourist settlements, for the golden sandy shores, for the coves, for the presence of numerous campsites, but also for the ancient farms, white islands in the green of the centuries-old olive trees. On this coastal strip, in addition to the tower-castle and port of Villanova, two ancient towers, San Leonardo and Pozzelle, defy the centuries; they are two historical presences whose roots go back to the 16th century, testifying dominations of other States which, alternately, took possession of our territories.
The State Road 379 and the numerous coplanar roads make it easy to move between the seaside resorts in the area, and the White City has been awarded the coveted Blue Flag for 21 years. The Blue Flag for beaches is awarded for the quality of the water, the coastline, the services, the safety measures, not to mention the environmental education, a confirmation for a territory that strengthens its excellence. The Ostuni coast has also been awarded the 5 Vele (five sails) by Legambiente, the prestigious recognition for the quality of tourism, sustainable management of the territory, and protection of the landscape, with full respect for the environment and celebrating our good food tradition. So, Ostuni does lack of anything!
The coast road of Ostuni is about 20 kilometers long, bordering to the north with the territory of Fasano and to the south with that of Carovigno.
